This class will showcase basic concepts of Disability Benefits and the Tax Implications that should be considered when designing effective disability benefit plans in order to provide improved coverage to employees and benefit the bottom line of the employer.

What plans are subject to nondiscrimination rules?  Recommended timelines for testing. Practical tips based on real-world examples.

Lisa Collins, CFC

Lisa Collins has worked in various capacities in the employee benefits field spanning more than 25+ years.   She has worked in HR, for a national health insurance company, a regional brokerage firm, and a national TPA in both sales and sales management roles. Currently, as the Director of PrimePay’s Broker Concierge Services, she is responsible for managing the Broker Concierge Program to provide benefit professionals with business solutions, strategies, resources, and tools to strengthen broker’s value proposition and client relationships, neutralize competitive threats, meet client demands and create new revenue streams.   Lisa manages national agency accounts.  Most recently, Lisa oversees PrimePay’s HR Services team responsible for providing consultation, analysis, builds, maintenance, and training for bswift, Employee Navigator, and Ease. 

She holds Certified Flexible Compensation and Advanced Chartered Benefit Consultant designations.  She is certified through NAHU to instruct on Consumer-Directed Health Care (now called the Account-Based Plan) recently working with NAHU to update the program’s content and NAHU’s technology certification program.  Lisa currently holds the state NAHU professional development chair in Virginia.  She is a graduate of Towson University with a Business Administration degree.  

 

Tamika Newson, JD

Tamika Newson is an Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel in Unum's Law Group.  She joined Unum after 22 years of employment law counseling and litigation as a Partner in several large law firms.  Prior to joining Unum, she litigated employment matters nationwide.  While in private practice, Ms. Newson was selected as a “Best Lawyer in America” in the area of employment law every year from 2013-2019.  She advises Human Resources on all employment-related legal issues, with particular emphasis on FMLA, ADA, leaves of absence, wage/hour compliance, military leaves, restrictive covenants, and employee relations issues.       

She also provides daily legal support to Unum's Leave Management Center and its ADA Services Center, which provide leave administration and ADA services to its customers.  Presently, Unum's leave administration product includes the administration of over 230 state leave laws in addition to FMLA and covers over 2.1 million lives.                                                     

Ms. Newson received her BA from DePauw University and her JD from Hamline University School of Law.  She is a certified trainer for CE credit and is a frequent national speaker on FMLA and ADA.

 

Margaret Guerrette

Margaret Guerrette is a Product Manager at Guardian where she is responsible for product development and management of group disability and leave products, with a heavy focus on state-mandated disability programs and state paid family & medical leave (PFML) programs.  Before coming to Guardian, Margaret worked at Unum for 10 years in the claims, law, and product organizations.                                                                     

Margaret holds a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law in Portland, Maine and a B.A. from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts.  

 

Thomas B. O'Keefe

Thomas O'Keefe is a Strategic Partner Consultant at The Standard where he generates and maintains a database of critical accounts, working with sales and service managers to ensure appropriate sales and account management plans are developed.  He works with national practice leaders to develop sales rep training and education materials for data warehouse and predictive modeling for medical and disability integration.  He has also revamped the internal sales toolkit for The Standard as well as external broker microsites.

 

Chris Watt

Chris is the longest tenured sales executive at Mutual of Omaha with over 20 years of experience. "We want to be the easiest company that you do business with and it all begins with our dedicated customer service model. During our recent “new normal”, we have used partnerships with enrollment firms and other virtual options to help us develop enrollment and implementation processes that are best in the industry."                       

Chris graduated from Indiana University with a triple major in Business, Human Resources, and Sociology. Chris lives in Alpharetta Georgia with his wife Erin and two daughters – Natalie and Nicole. His hobbies include golf and family outings.

 

Ryan Rutherford

Ryan graduated from the University of Georgia with a BBA in Risk Management & Insurance in 1995 and has spent the last 25 years in the group employee benefits industry. Ryan has been with Mutual of Omaha since 2004 in his current role.             

Ryan and his wife, Melissa have four children from age 13 to 20 and enjoy spending time in the NC mountains in their free time. Ryan enjoys traveling, playing golf, and following college football in addition to time with the family.

 

Stephen Wynn

Stephen Wynn is a Senior Business Analyst at CXC Solutions. He is a subject matter expert in several areas of benefits’ compliance including nondiscrimination testing, plan documentation, ERISA, and ACA compliance. His role at CXC involves client consulting, managing strategic partnerships, and developing compliance solutions for brokers and third-party administrators.

Stacy joined the Gregory & Appel organization in March of 1994.  She has over 20 years of experience in the Employee Benefits arena.                   

Stacy has considerable experience in all aspects of employee benefits and with many different types and sizes of employers.  The majority of her clients range in size from 100 – 500 lives.  She has a great deal of experience with municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, schools, medical practices, law firms, and manufacturing facilities.                                                                                                                                              

Stacy has been a member of the Indiana and National Associations of Health Underwriters since 1999 and has earned her PPACA Professional Certification from the National Association of Health Underwriters.

 

Danielle Capilla

Danielle is a Vice President and the Director of Compliance for Alera’s Employee Benefits division. She previously served as the Senior Vice President of Compliance and Operations and Chief Compliance Officer at United Benefit Advisors (UBA). Additionally, she served as an Adjunct Professor at DePaul University. She worked as a Senior Writer Analyst at Wolters Kluwer and as a Law Clerk at Clifford Law Offices. Danielle graduated with a B.A. in Sociology, History, and Business at Tulane University. She earned her JD in Health Law from DePaul University College of Law.

Mr. Barrow is a sought-after speaker on all aspects of employee benefits law, including the Affordable Care Act.
